How to FTP Upload Files to a Web Host
There are a few ways to upload your files to your web host. Some methods are faster than others and some are more secure. You don’t have to choose the same way all the time, you are allowed to change methods at will for each file transfer.
The most popular method is using plain ftp. This is the quick and easy way to do it. You will need a ftp client software program for your PC. First you enter information about your destination host such as host name or IP address, username, and password in the appropriate boxes. The next step is to press start, or connect, depending on which client you have. The final step is to select source files from the left side panel of client and then select destination directory on the right side and press the transfer button. using this method your files will be uploaded one by one without any encryption. This should not be a problem for files that are being publicly posted to your website.
There is a more secure way to transfer files that depends on encryption. SFTP is a secure protocol that scrambles the data in route so it can’t be read by nosy people. You will need a SFTP enabled destination host to use this method. You can ask your hosting service company to configure this for you. If you have ssh access to your server then you can use that account. You may notice SFTP is a little bit slower than regular ftp, that is because of the CPU overhead to process each packet. You may notice that your home directory is different when you connect this way. Most software packages I have tried support this method.
The third way to upload is using FTPS. This is another way to encrypt files. I can be kind of complicated to setup since you have to install and enable a SSL(secure sockets layer) certificate. One of the complications is crossing firewalls because of the ports are unknown making it almost impossible to make it work. This is the least popular option. I have read all about it but I have never seen it in use. Countries outside the US may want to look into this method because of the 40 bit restrictions. once someone asked me to set this up for them. I convinced them to use SFTP instead, this saved hours of time and a lot of grief.
There are many good choices for ftp clients. now days I use Filezilla as my 1st choice, it is also free and there is a version for both Windows and Linux. other good choices for ftp programs are Smart FTP and Core FTP. You will easily be able to find one you like by searching online. also beware of upgrades being offered for sale that you do not need and will probably never use. that is how they make their money.
Other than ftp you can use a secure Linux shell with the SCP(secure copy protocol) to move files from host to host via the command line. I wont get into the technical details here, I just wanted you to know it is an option.
Now you know all about your FTP choices and how they work. You can use regular FTP, SFTP, and FTPS. Remember that you do not have to pay for a ftp client and there are alternative methods of transferring files.
