Art show seeking local exhibits

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – The Washington County Arts Council inc. invites local artists working in any medium to submit their best new work for WCAC’s “Community Art show: The Best Local Art of 2011.” The juried community art exhibit will run from Dec. 6 through Jan. 4, with an opening reception on from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 9. The WCAC Gallery is located at 14 W. Washington St.

Artists needed for local craft fair

MARTINSBURG – The Berkeley Arts Council is seeking artists and artisans to participate in the 2011 Holiday Art and Craft Market in downtown Martinsburg from Nov. 23 through the Christmas shopping period. The Market will be set up in a currently unoccupied store on Queen Street.

An information and sign-up meeting for interested artists and artisans is set from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Martinsburg Room at the Martinsburg Public Library.

Artists will participate in an informal co-op and will be asked to pay a fee of $30 plus a 20 percent commission. Participants will help with the setup and operation of the gallery. Space is limited so artists will be encouraged to sign up for the market at one of these meetings.

Artist workshops now being offered

MARTINSBURG -The Berkeley Arts Council is kicking off its third year of activities with workshops for artists who want to submit their work to juried exhibits and competitions. Sessions will be held Saturday at The Arts Centre, 300 W. King St. Sessions will include “Photographing your Artwork” and “Improve your Success in Juried Exhibits.” Registration is for both sessions is $60 for Berkeley Arts Council members and $75 for non-members. Cost for one session is $40 for members and $50 for non-members.

Arts Festival seeking vendors

HAGERSTOWN, Md.- if you have a niche for arts and crafts, the city of Hagerstown invites you to share your gift with others through the fifth annual Autumn Arts Festival.

The Autumn Arts Festival is free to the public and is scheduled to be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 17 and 18 at Hagerstown’s City Park. Interested craft vendors who live in Washington County can participate for $25, and out of county vendors can show their work for $50. The fee reserves a 15-by-15 foot space, and vendors supply their display.

In addition to the arts and crafts display, the festival highlights local artists through art demonstrations and exhibits, living history encampments, railroading displays, children’s activities, live music, food and more.

Several bands from around the tri-state area will perform on the Hager House stage on Saturday and Sunday including: Voxology, “Sassafrazz” featuring Mary Dailey and Bob Adams, Jay Armsworthy and Eastern Tradition and the Stoney Creek Bluegrass Band. On Saturday, Tori Anderson and Possum Holler sponsored by Susquehanna Bank will perform at 4:30 p.m. in the City Park Bandshell. A full schedule of events will be detailed in a subsequent release.

Old cars being sought for show

BRUNSWICK, Md. – 1950s car, trucks, street rods and motorcycles are being sought and welcome at the 2011 Brunswick Railroad Days Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 1 and 2 in downtown Brunswick.

Show off your vintage and prized 1950′s vehicle and be part of a car show at this two-day, annual event showcasing: train exhibits and film classics, round-trip scenic Marc train rides to Harpers Ferry, 1950s History Walk with Barbershop Quartet and Country/Bluegrass, Brunswick Railroad Museum Tours, Arts n’ Crafts, artisan demonstrations, local and ethnic food, Happy Hour, concerts with The Fabulous Hubcaps, The Rock & Roll Relics and a Saturday evening “Rock Hop” dance with The Shades (7:30 p.m.), children’s activities, car show and more. Writers sought for region anthology

SHEPHERDSTOWN -Writers of poetry, fiction and nonfiction are invited to submit their unpublished work for inclusion in Shepherd University’s Anthology of Appalachian Writers, Ron Rash Volume IV, scheduled for publication in spring 2012.

Original works, including photographic art, with some connection to the region of Appalachia are preferred.

The anthology is devoted to the work of regional writers whose work expresses a love of language, storytelling, cultural traditions and heritage of the Appalachians.
